At BBSO with Actor Mert Fırat, Art Theorist Dr. Ezgi Bakçay, and Academic Dr. Hande Barlın

The second panel of "Local Government, Art, and Politics," moderated by BBSO Project Coordinator @barancctnkaya, featured actor Mert Fırat, art theorist Dr. Ezgi Bakçay, and academic Dr. Hande Barlın.
@mert_firat emphasized the relationship between art, social change, and local governance, noting that art is a powerful tool for activism, beyond just a form of expression. Fırat highlighted, “Art provides a vital platform for questioning social issues and creating change,” urging more youth participation in this field. He also stated that local governments could strengthen social bonds by supporting art projects.
Academic Dr. Hande Barlın stressed the importance of strengthening the relationship between local governments and academia, pointing out the need for universities to be active outside their campuses. She explained that projects with municipalities could bring together academics, artists, and various community groups, offering opportunities for societal benefit. Barlın added that making the academic system more participatory and collaborative would accelerate this process.
Art theorist @ezgibakcay emphasized the importance of inviting artists into neighborhoods, stating that freedom is about creating urban public spaces together. Akçay argued that local governments need to develop macro-level cultural policies and adopt a strategic approach instead of temporary solutions through spontaneous decisions. She highlighted the importance of creating environments where people can interact, share experiences of solidarity, and communal living, especially referring to the concept of "porosity."
