We came together with the distinguished ethnomusicologist Evrim Hikmet Öğüt at Another Politics School.
Şişli Municipality hosted our Another Politics School, where the esteemed ethnomusicologist Evrim Hikmet Öğüt met with the participants.
Evrim Hikmet Öğüt conducted an extensive workshop addressing the role of music in cultural and sociopolitical contexts. Öğüt, particularly through his studies on Arab communities in Iraq, Syria, and the USA, examined how music influences social memory and identity. He discussed how music, while creating a sense of belonging in these communities, could also foster division and political debates between societies.
The session focused on the connection between art and politics. It examined how music has been affected by the political atmosphere of different eras and how it shapes social identities. In Turkey, the playing of works such as "Ölürüm Türkiyem" or the Mehter March in certain contexts serves as key examples of music being used as an ideological tool.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Evrim Hikmet Öğüt for contributing to Another Politics School!
