The winners will be selected through a competition open to municipalities interested in applying for the "Most Roma Friendly Mayor" award. The competition is running simultaneously in the Western Balkans and Turkey and there will be one winner per country.
The winning mayors from Albania, Serbia, Kosovo, the Republic of North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Turkey will participate in a special event during the Roma Week in Brussels, 9-11 April 2024, where they will meet with senior representatives of DG NEAR.
The award ceremony will highlight the philosophy of empowerment, mobilisation and equal dialogue between local authorities and Roma communities, highlighting positive examples of Roma participation, where municipalities and Roma communities can come together and dialogue on an equal footing.
The competition for this award will be open from 8 February to 29 February 2024. An independent jury will be established in each country and will select the winner of the "Most Roma Friendly Mayor" competition based on a questionnaire.
