Roma Education Fund Scholarship Applications Extended to 15 March!

Scholarship applications for Roma students have started within the scope of Zero Discrimination Association's European Union regional action project "Increasing Educational Opportunities for Roma Youth in the Western Balkans and Turkey" funded by the European Union (EU) and Roma Education Fund (RARE).

Within the scope of the Roma Education Fund RARE Scholarship programme, scholarships will be provided to Roma youth continuing their education at high school and university. Young people who are eligible for scholarships will also have the opportunity to develop themselves academically and personally through mentoring services and various support courses.

The aim is to increase access to education for Roma youth.

While the education rate of Roma youth is quite low, absenteeism and school dropout rates are quite high. One of the biggest obstacles to access to education is economic difficulties. Due to economic difficulties, families are unable to meet the costs of education. In addition, families' lack of knowledge about the importance of education and the lack of role models accelerate the disengagement of these young people from education.

This project aims to reduce the financial difficulties Roma high school and university students face in accessing education and problems of adaptation to school life, as well as to reduce the risk of failing and failing classes and the problems Roma youth face in transitioning to employment.

Gender Equality Focused Scholarship Programme for Roma Youth

The scholarship programme, which will pay particular attention to gender equality in the evaluation of scholarship applications, is the only scholarship programme in Turkey to be provided to Roma youth. Through this special scholarship programme, an important step will be taken to reduce the educational disadvantages of Roma youth and provide them with a fairer future.

Application Requirements and Details

The requirements for high school students to apply for this scholarship programme are that the student must be Roma and studying in Edirne, Istanbul, Izmir or Hatay.

For university students, the basic requirements are that the student must be Roma and studying for an undergraduate degree in the academic year 2023/24. There is no requirement for university students to reside or study in a particular province; applications from all over Turkey are accepted.

Achievement levels, socio-economic status and motivation for the scholarship will also be important criteria in the selection of those who will benefit from the scholarship programme.
