Roma: The Package Brings Improvement But Not a Definitive Solution

As part of the International Solidarity Events with Roma, Roma citizens showcased colorful scenes at Tünel Square in Beyoğlu. Addressing the democratization package, Roma stated that while the developments are improvements, they will not provide a definitive solution to the problems.

Gathering at Tünel Square, Roma citizens held a demonstration as part of the International Solidarity Events with Roma. The Roma, who enjoyed themselves with music, were watched with interest by nearby citizens. After a rap music performance, the Roma made a press statement. The statement was read by Elmas Arus on behalf of the Zero Discrimination Association and the Social Change Association.

Arus claimed that Roma face discrimination in various countries worldwide and argued that in Turkey, they are excluded from social living areas through urban transformation projects in certain regions. Referring to the democratization package announced by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Arus said, "The newly announced government initiative package mentions regulations that will improve the situation of Roma. Although such regulations provide improvement regarding discrimination against Roma, a long-term and comprehensive strategy and program are needed to resolve the issue."

After the statement, the group dispersed.
