We commemorate the victims of the Roma Genocide
Between 1933 and 1945, tens of thousands of European Roma (Roma and Sinti) were victims of Nazi persecution. In addition to the prejudices they had been subjected to for many years, Roma were viewed by the Nazi regime as “asocial” and “inferior”, posing a threat to the biological purity and power of the “superior Aryan race.” During World War II, the Nazis and their collaborators massacred tens of thousands of Roma, including women, children and the elderly. It is estimated that the number of Roma killed by the Nazis was around 500,000.
August 2, the date on which the section of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp where Roma were held (“Gypsy Camp”) was closed, is recognized as World Roma Genocide Remembrance Day.
We will come together in Galatasaray Square on Saturday, August 2, 2014, for the victims of the Roma Genocide, which will be commemorated for the first time in Turkey with an open-air event.
We invite everyone to the event to commemorate the victims of the Roma Genocide and to show solidarity with the Roma who continue to be discriminated against today.
