Award from Europe to Turkish Director

The humanitarian aid award organized by the Council of Europe in the name of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg was given to Turkish director of Romani origin Elmas Arus.

ELMAS ARUS WAS AWARDED

The award was presented to the Turkish director by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland and the President of the Jury, Swedish diplomat Hans Correll. Elmas Arus was deemed worthy of the award for her work to improve the living conditions of Romani people in Turkey and abroad.

THE FIRST TIME A TURK WAS GIVEN THE 'RAOUL WALLENBERG AWARD'

Arus said in a statement after the ceremony that she was very honored to receive the award. The 'Raoul Wallenberg Award' given to Arus for the first time will now be given by the Council of Europe to individuals or organizations that have implemented a significant humanitarian project every two years.
